Spescom sponsors a PlayPump for Tshapasha Primary School in Limpopo
Many rural communities lack access to fresh, clean, running water, an essential that many of us take for granted. Spescom Limited is aiding a few of these communities with its ‘PlayPump’ initiative - a merry-go-round with a difference as it also double as a water pump that can bring clean drinking borehole water to up to 2,500 people.
Spescom has recently delivered and installed a PlayPump at the Tshapasha Primary School, near Messina in the Limpopo Province, providing the community with fresh water and enhancing public health whilst providing play equipment and enjoyment to many children. This is the second PlayPump Spescom has sponsored, the first having gone to Tihotihonya Primary, also near Messina.
Says Jené Palmer, CEO at Spescom Limited: “We are committed to improving the lives of children and their families in disadvantaged rural communities. The PlayPump is an innovative, sustainable, patented water pump powered by children at play and allows communities to become more self-sufficient and sustainable.”
The PlayPump makes use of the merry-go-round which provides the action to pump water from underground into a tank that can hold up to 2 500 litres of water. The tank is positioned approximately seven metres above the ground. The water is piped from this tank to a tap where people can draw fresh, clean water.
The PlayPump system is also being used to increase HIV/AIDS awareness through the use of public health messages on PlayPump billboards that are attached to the sides of the tank.
Adds Palmer: “Access to clean drinking water is a critical step in terms of achieving social upliftment. It is also a basic requirement. When this fundamental is addressed, it frees the community to focus their energy and attention on other initiatives that can further benefit them.”
